Lessingham, Miles

The operations superintendent at Larksoken Power Station has a “death’s head” appearance with “shadows under the deep-set eyes and [a] wide, rather knobbly forehead with its swathe of fair undisciplined hair” (DD 74–75). Of all the station staff, Miles seems most concerned about whether director Alex Mair might take another position, taking with him the station’s research component. Miles was the first on the scene when Dr. Tobias Gledhill committed suicide at the station. Miles says of Toby, “I was in love with him. He knew, because I told him. He wasn’t in love with me and he wasn’t gay,” but they did spend one night together because Toby “was kind” (DD 506–07). Miles finds the body of The Whistler’s fifth victim, Christine Baldwin.
